Choosing a Contractor

As a home owner, you may feel that the time is ripe enough for some renovation and repainting work. You may also wish to give your home a new look by painting both the exterior and interior, with some attractive shades of colors. However, due to constraints of time and labor, you may also want to hire the expert services of a contractor. Choosing a right contractor will help you save precious time and money, and to get the job done in a most professional way.

Though there are many advantages attached to an expert contractor, you may wish to consider all positive benefits vis-à-vis negative aspects. However, before awarding the contract to any of these contractors, make sure that you consider following things like:

  1. Do I really need the entire home to be repainted?
  2. Do I have the required time to prepare the surface and what is the quantum of the surface preparation needed for the job?
  3. Do I need to move around those furniture, ladders and fixtures?
  4. Can I live in an area that is left unfinished or partially finished?
  5. Once the job is finished, will I be able to carry out that tedious cleaning job of removing paint stains on the floor?

Before awarding the contract to anyone, you will also consider following things:

  1. Though there are a number of contractors available for your service, make a list of all those contractors who are well known for their good quality of work. Talk to each of them and get a detailed quote. Never forget about insurance and bonding aspect of the work.
  2. Your home will have many areas like wood, walls, aluminum partitions and stucco areas. Each of these areas has different types of surfaces and needs separate treatment. Some of these areas may need an intensive surface preparation, while others may need a round or two of priming. You may also need to decide the quality, type and brand of the paint materials before assigning the contract work. You may also wish to know the number of coats that need to be worked on the overall surface.
  3. Painting exterior walls, staircases and roofs demand a considerable amount of work. On the other hand painting those sensitive interior areas requires different precautions. You will need to make a comprehensive list of measures that would protect precious furniture, painting, curios, decorative pieces and small plantings in your garden.
  4. How many days will this job need to finish the entire work? What is the manpower requirement? Is there any contingency measure to counter unfinished work?
  5. What type of warranties are offered by the contractor? Is it on the entire work or will it cover just the materials? Does the warranty extend to a particular period of time?
  6. Is the contractor who is short listed ready to provide a list of references, from whom you can get more information about the contractor?
  7. How efficient and punctual is your contractor? Is the short listed contactor courteous in dealing with customers? Is he/she short tempered? Will the contractor answer all your queries and clarifications?

Once you have this spade work ready, you may wish to fix a time frame within which you can finish the entire work.
